She was a performer as well as a designer, and music innovator. She was Mexican-American, but also traditional. She introduced Tejano into the mainstream of music. It was an emerging star who's tragic death threw it into turmoil. It is also the case with a talented, charismatic and young artist passes away too early, many mourned the potential that she could not yet achieve. In the following years, the fans became inspired to work even harder in order to ensure that her successes would not fade away. Selena's tragic murder by a gunman triggered the outpouring of emotions within Latino communities, similar to those who reacted to Elvis Presley's death and John Lennon's. Selena was a hugely popular singer among Latinos in North America. But her songs touched the hearts of both young and the old. Selena was an asexual, flamboyant performer on stage and was often referred to by the Latina Madonna. On stage, Selena was an outstanding role model, as she actively participated in antidrug and AIDS campaigns.
